As part of our Day of the Seafarer celebrations, Fleet Management welcomed former India cricketer Irfan Pathan to our office in Mumbai. He spent time with seafarers, shore teams and cadets, and joined an open Q&A where he spoke on teamwork, leadership and performing under pressure.

Throughout the visit, his message centred on the value of seafarers and the role they play in everyday life. In every interaction, he praised seafarers for the responsibility they carry and the standards they uphold in demanding conditions. He spoke about the pride he saw in the profession, and the discipline, teamwork and consistency needed to perform well at sea. His message was simple and clear: Seafarers do essential work, often behind the scenes, and that work deserves recognition.

Drawing on his experience in international cricket, he often compared the game with life at sea. In the Q&A session, he spoke about pressure, trust, setbacks and the need to stay focused over time. He reflected on the challenges he faced early in his career and how staying committed helped him move forward. He used those experiences to encourage seafarers and office colleagues to face challenges directly, stay mentally strong and keep going.

He also spoke about time away from home, a reality shared by both cricketers and seafarers. He encouraged those present to stay motivated during difficult periods and to draw strength from purpose, routine and support from the wider team. Across his responses, the parallels between the cricket field and a ship at sea remained consistent. Preparation matters. Trust matters. Calm decision-making matters, especially in tough conditions.

“Being a seafarer is not just about the job. It is about responsibility, teamwork, and performing under pressure every single day,” he said. “Most of what we use every day is transported by sea, and that only happens because of seafarers.”

During the visit, Irfan Pathan launched Pulse, our dedicated app for seafarers, at our Andheri office. He introduced the app as a platform designed to support seafarers in their day-to-day work and engagement. He also formally unveiled Care 360, a holistic wellbeing and welfare resource developed by Fleet Care, FPD and QCD, which brings together practical guidance and support for seafarer wellbeing.

He also met six Fleet cadets, including five from the International Maritime Institute, for a focused discussion on growth, character and leadership. The session gave cadets the chance to hear directly from someone who has experienced pressure, setbacks and success at the highest level. He later visited our in-office exhibition, where he learned more about the scale of goods transported by sea and the role shipping plays in the global economy.

His visit brought the focus back to the people behind safe and reliable operations at sea. Through his message and interactions, Irfan Pathan recognised seafarers not only for the work they do, but for the resilience, professionalism and commitment that define the profession.
