A World-Class Education with
the International Maritime Institute
Anchored in Maritime Excellence, Broadening Horizons
The International Maritime Institute (IMI) plays an important role in developing the next generation of maritime professionals who will support the future of global shipping. A premier maritime training institute, IMI offers a full spectrum of pre sea and post sea programmes designed to build the knowledge, discipline and leadership needed for successful careers at sea.
Approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and affiliated with the Indian Maritime University, Chennai, IMI delivers training that meets national and international standards while staying closely connected to the needs of the modern maritime industry.
Cadets benefit from both academic learning and hands on experience through:
- Advanced simulators, including a 270 degree bridge, ECDIS and full mission engine room systems
- A full training ship on campus
- Hands on workshops and specialised laboratories
- Training environments that recreate real maritime scenarios in a safe, controlled setting
Supported by experienced faculty and a campus designed to foster focus, wellbeing and professional development, IMI provides an environment where future maritime professionals can thrive. From aspiring cadets to experienced officers advancing their skills, every learner benefits from structured guidance, practical training and a strong sense of purpose as they prepare for life at sea.
With more than 8,000 alumni sailing worldwide and a 35-year record of proven training excellence, IMI continues to strengthen the global maritime workforce.
IMI’s connection with the global maritime industry was further strengthened when it became part of The Caravel Group in 2025. By combining IMI’s established reputation for disciplined maritime education with Caravel’s long-term vision and Fleet Management Limited’s operational expertise and scale, we have created a strong and practical pathway from training to professional sea service.
This training approach reflects IMI’s values of safety, excellence, ingenuity and responsibility, shaping cadets into capable and confident officers and engineers. These values also support Fleet Management Limited’s ability to deliver safe, efficient and sustainable operations outcomes for shipowners around the world.
Through this close collaboration, IMI continues to enhance its curriculum, expand the use of advanced training technologies and create clearer, more predictable career pathways for cadets entering the maritime profession. The relationship with Fleet Management gives graduates valuable opportunities to transition from the classroom to the vessel with confidence.
Preparing Seafarers for the Future of Global Shipping
Safety
The lives of our cadets and those of the crews they will serve and lead are precious above all else. The cornerstone of everything we teach and our cadets learn is safety and the wellbeing of others.
Ingenuity
The sea is a dynamic and exacting environment that requires resourcefulness to navigate safely and efficiently. We prepare our cadets for every possibility, cultivating ingenuity as an instinct.
Excellence
Excellence is our North Star. It reflects the quality of our training, the shape of our institutional culture and the discipline and rigour we seek to instill in our cadets.
Responsibility
We are committed to educating future generations of seafarers and responsible for equipping them with the training they need to persevere through every voyage. We shape custodians of vessels, goods and the environment.

From Classroom to Commission

Fleet Management provides onboard opportunities that enable IMI cadets and trainee marine engineers to begin their professional journeys at sea. After completing their training and meeting the required English language, physical health and mental health standards, candidates become eligible to join a Fleet Management vessel, where they can apply their training in real operational environments and take their first steps as maritime professionals.
During their placement, trainees develop practical experience and operational confidence while working alongside experienced crews. Their development is supported through continued technical and safety training, simulator practice and virtual learning modules that reinforce operational awareness and prepare them for the responsibilities of life at sea.
