Fleet Management Supports Japan’s First Ship-to-Ship Methanol Bunkering

Fleet Management has reaffirmed its position as a global leader in advanced ship management by supporting Japan’s first ship-to-ship methanol bunkering operation.

Pioneering Methanol as a Marine Fuel

On 6 February 2026 at Tokyo Bay, Yokohama, the bunkering operation took place onboard Kohzan Maru VII, with the bunkering vessel Eika Maru, using domestically produced bio-methanol supplied by Mitsubishi Gas Chemical.

Methanol is a low carbon alternative fuel with properties that differ markedly from conventional marine fuels. It is more volatile and flammable, requiring careful planning, specialised systems and highly trained crews. Fleet Management’s expertise in managing complex, high-risk operations ensured the transfer was carried out safely and in full compliance with regulatory standards. When handled correctly, methanol burns cleanly, producing lower emissions of CO2, sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), making this operation an important step in supporting Japan’s energy transition.

Careful Planning and Coordination

Preparations for the operation began months in advance. Fleet Management led technical reviews and readiness checks with all stakeholders, including Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), the Japan Government, the Japan Coast Guard, vessel owner Eifuku Kaiun Co., Ltd., and the bunkering vessel manager.

These preparations included hazard identification, alignment on operational procedures, and detailed safety planning covering pre-transfer checks, execution controls, emergency response and post-transfer verification. This careful coordination ensured that all parties were aligned and ready for a safe and efficient transfer.

A Milestone for Japan and Fleet Management

The successful completion of this first-of-a-kind operation demonstrates Japan’s readiness for green fuels and highlights Fleet Management’s capability to deliver complex operations safely. It also reinforces Fleet Management’s role as a trusted partner for owners, charterers and authorities as the maritime industry transitions to low-carbon operations.

Prakash Chandra, Director, Gas SME, said,

“Delivering the energy transition at sea requires more than new fuels. It requires operational excellence, clear governance and trusted partnerships. This project demonstrates Fleet Management’s ability to deliver safe, practical and scalable solutions.”
