In a powerful feature on the human impact of the Persian Gulf crisis, CNN’s Kristie Lu Stout spoke with The Caravel Group CEO Angad Banga and Fleet Management Master Mariner Capt. Samanth Baktavatsalam, offering a rare glimpse into what life is like for seafarers caught in the crossfire of conflict.
With more than 20,000 seafarers currently stranded west of the Strait of Hormuz, the interview sought to bring forward the human dimension of a crisis often reduced to satellite images, freight charts and geopolitical commentary. As Angad noted, “Behind every statistic is a person,” and global trade depends on the people who steer those vessels.
Capt. Baktavatsalam shared his first-hand account of guiding a 23‑member crew through three weeks of uncertainty in high‑risk waters. He described maintaining strict safety measures, supporting crew morale and keeping transparent communication at the heart of leadership. His reflections underscored the extraordinary professionalism, resilience, and calm shown by seafarers even as projectiles and aerial interceptions occurred in the vicinity.
In the broader context, Angad stressed the rising frequency of maritime crises with four major events in six years – the Covid‑19 crew‑change emergency, seafarers trapped in the Black Sea, Red Sea missile attacks, and now the Strait of Hormuz. Across these events, seafarers have kept global trade moving under intense pressure, yet their contributions often fade from public memory once headlines move on.
“I wish that the world understood the essential nature of seafarers and the importance they have in global trade.”
This feature serves as an important reminder: seafarers are civilians who have not signed up for conflict, yet they are frequently on the frontline when geopolitical events disrupt global supply routes. Their safety, wellbeing and voices must remain central to global attention and policymaking.
Fleet Management remains committed to supporting its Masters and crew, prioritising safe navigation, mental wellbeing, and transparent communication. These values that anchor our operations in moments of calm and adversity alike.
